Sour Client — Terms of Use

Effective date: 2026-08-21 Terms version: 2026-08-21.2 Operator: sourama (an individual, operating as "Sour Client") Contact: contact@sourclient.com Official site: https://sourclient.com

Changed on 2026-09-06 — terminology only, not a material change (see 10.3). What these Terms used to call a cape is now called a cloak, throughout. No right, obligation, price, or scope changed, and the Terms version above is deliberately unchanged: bumping it would force every user to re-accept under 10.2 and would signal a material change that did not happen. The reference in 4.2 to official Minecraft/Mojang capes is unchanged, because it names Mojang's capes rather than ours.

These Terms of Use ("Terms") govern the Sour Client launcher, the Sour Client game-side modification for Minecraft: Java Edition 1.8.9, the Sour Client backend services (account linking, cloak sync, and any future cosmetics/entitlements), and the sourclient.com website (together, the "Service"). By installing or using any part of the Service you agree to these Terms. If you do not agree, do not use the Service.

You must be at least 13 years old to use the Service, or 16 if that is the minimum age of digital consent where you live. If you are under 18 you may use the Service only with the permission of a parent or guardian, who is responsible for your use of it and for any payment made through your account (Section 5.3).

The launcher asks you to accept these Terms when you first sign in, and records that you did, together with the version above. See Section 10.2.

NOT AN OFFICIAL MINECRAFT PRODUCT. NOT APPROVED BY OR ASSOCIATED WITH MOJANG OR MICROSOFT.

1. What Sour Client is (and is not)

1.1 Sour Client is an independent launcher and Forge-based modification. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or supported by Mojang Synergies AB, Microsoft Corporation, Hypixel Inc., Lunar Client, Badlion, or any Minecraft server.

1.2 Sour Client does not include or sell Minecraft. Minecraft game files are downloaded by the launcher from Mojang's official servers. Your use of Minecraft itself is governed by the Minecraft EULA (https://www.minecraft.net/en-us/eula), which you must accept and comply with independently of these Terms.

1.3 You must own Minecraft. The Service is intended solely for players who own a legitimate copy of Minecraft: Java Edition on a Microsoft account. You must not use the Service, or any local/offline session feature, to play Minecraft without owning it. Doing so violates the Minecraft EULA and these Terms.

2. Accounts and identity

2.1 The launcher signs you in to your own Microsoft account using Microsoft's device-code flow. Your Microsoft credentials are handled by Microsoft; Sour Client never sees your password.

2.2 The Sour Client backend identifies you by your Minecraft account (UUID and username) using Mojang's standard server-join handshake. There is no separate Sour Client password. You are responsible for the security of your Microsoft/Minecraft account.

2.3 You must not impersonate another player, use an account you do not own, or attempt to obtain tokens, cloaks, or entitlements belonging to another player's UUID.

3. Acceptable use

You agree that you will not:

4. User content (cloaks and other uploads)

4.1 You may upload cloak images to the backend for display on your own player. You keep ownership of what you upload, but you grant sourama a worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free licence to host, store, reproduce, and publicly display that content to other Sour Client users for the purpose of operating the Service.

4.2 You warrant that your uploads do not infringe anyone else's rights (including trademarks and copyrighted art, e.g. official Minecraft/Mojang capes, or other clients' paid cosmetics) and are not illegal in New Zealand or your own country.

4.3 Uploads are moderated. sourama may remove any cloak or other content at any time, with or without notice, for any reason, including reports from other users or rights holders. Repeated violations may result in suspension or termination (Section 8). What may not be uploaded, and how every upload is screened before it is stored, is set out in the Content Policy.

4.4 Takedown / infringement reports: rights holders can report infringing content to contact@sourclient.com with (a) the content/UUID concerned, (b) proof of rights, and (c) a contact address. We will review and, where justified, remove the content promptly.

4.5 If your upload was removed and you believe that was wrong, you can appeal. Email contact@sourclient.com naming the content and why you believe the removal was a mistake or a misidentification. We will re-review it and tell you the outcome. Automated screening can be wrong — the Content Policy describes what is screened and how to appeal a false match — and a removal power with no route back is not a moderation system, it is just a removal power.

5. Purchases, plans and cosmetics

Sour Gold is the paid plan. It is sold as a recurring subscription and as a limited one-off "Lifetime" purchase. Everything in this section applies to both unless it says otherwise.

5.1 What you are buying

5.1.1 Cosmetic items, name colours, marks and plan features are licences, not goods: you receive a personal, non-transferable, revocable licence to display them within Sour Client for as long as the Service operates and your plan entitles you to them. You do not acquire ownership of any cosmetic. Cosmetics have no cash value and do not affect gameplay.

5.1.2 You may not resell, trade, gift, rent, or transfer an entitlement, and you may not share your account in order to give someone else the benefit of one. Doing so may result in the entitlement being withdrawn without refund.

5.1.3 Some cosmetics are granted rather than sold — the developer, staff and beta-tester marks come from your standing with the Service, not from a purchase. They cannot be bought, confer no entitlement, and end when the standing that granted them ends.

5.2 Payment and the merchant of record

5.2.1 Payments are processed by Lemon Squeezy, which acts as merchant of record — it is the seller for the purposes of your transaction and handles card processing and applicable sales tax/VAT/GST. Its own terms and privacy policy govern the payment itself. Your card details are never sent to, held by, or seen by SourClient.

5.2.2 Prices are shown at checkout in the currency you select and may change. A price change never applies to a billing period you have already paid for.

5.3 If you are under 18, you must have a parent or guardian's permission before making any purchase, and the parent or guardian must make or authorise the payment.

5.4 Subscriptions: renewal and cancellation

5.4.1 A Sour Gold subscription is billed in advance for the billing period you choose at checkout, and renews automatically at the end of each period, at the then-current price for that plan, until you cancel. Renewal is charged to the payment method on file.

5.4.2 You can cancel at any time, from your account page at sourclient.com or through the payment provider's own management link. Cancelling stops the next renewal; it does not end the period you have already paid for — Sour Gold and everything it unlocks stay active until that period ends. There is no cancellation fee and no minimum term.

5.4.3 We will tell you before a renewal price changes, with at least the notice period in Section 10, so you can cancel first.

5.4.4 When a subscription ends, Gold-only cosmetics stop being displayed. They are not deleted: if you subscribe again they become available again, subject to 5.5.3.

5.5 Lifetime, and how tenure-unlocked cosmetics work

5.5.1 "Lifetime" means the lifetime of the Service, not of the purchaser. It is a one-off payment that keeps Sour Gold active for as long as Sour Client operates, with no renewal. If the Service is discontinued, Section 8.3 applies.

5.5.2 Only 100 Lifetime places will ever be sold, and the counter on the pricing page shows how many remain. That number is a cap on places sold; places granted at no charge by the operator (for example to staff or contributors) do not consume one and are not counted by it.

5.5.3 Some name colours unlock according to how long you have continuously held Sour Gold. The ladder and its timings are published on the pricing page.

5.6 Refunds, and your right to change your mind

5.6.1 If you are a consumer in the EU or the UK you have a statutory right to withdraw from a purchase of digital content within 14 days. That right is lost only where, at checkout, you expressly consented to the content being supplied immediately and acknowledged that you would lose the right of withdrawal by doing so. Where you did not give both, the 14-day right applies and we will refund you within 14 days of being told.

5.6.2 Outside 5.6.1, purchases are non-refundable once the entitlement has been delivered, except where a refund is required by law — including the New Zealand Consumer Guarantees Act 1993 where it applies to you, and the mandatory consumer law of your own country.

5.6.3 A chargeback raised on a delivered entitlement may result in that entitlement, and any other entitlement on the same account, being suspended.

5.7 If an entitlement has to be withdrawn

Entitlements may be modified or discontinued if required for legal compliance (including compliance with Mojang/Microsoft's Minecraft Usage Guidelines and EULA). If a paid cosmetic must be permanently withdrawn for legal reasons within 90 days of your purchase, we will offer a replacement or a refund.

6. Open features and third-party services

6.1 Optional features (Hypixel stats overlays, Urchin tags) call third-party APIs using API keys you supply. Your use of those APIs is governed by the third parties' policies (e.g. the Hypixel API Policy). These features are off by default; enabling them is your choice and your responsibility.

6.2 Sour Client may interoperate with mods you install yourself (e.g. OptiFine). Those mods are licensed to you by their own authors; Sour Client does not grant you any rights to them.

7. Intellectual property

7.1 The Sour Client launcher, game-side mod, backend, website, name, and logo are the property of sourama. All rights reserved. You may not copy, modify, decompile, resell, or redistribute the Service except as expressly permitted in writing or by law.

7.2 "Minecraft" is a trademark of Mojang Synergies AB. All Minecraft code, content, and assets belong to Mojang/Microsoft. Third-party components are credited in the Third-Party Notices.

8. Suspension and termination

8.1 You may stop using the Service at any time; you can delete your cloak and backend data as described in the Privacy Policy.

8.2 sourama may suspend or terminate your access (including entitlements) if you materially breach these Terms, abuse the Service, or where required by law. Where practical, we will warn you first for minor breaches. Access ended for a material breach is ended without refund, and this does not affect any refund right you have under Section 5.6 or under law that cannot be excluded.

8.3 sourama may discontinue the Service (in whole or in part) at any time. For a paid Service discontinuation, Section 5.7 applies to recent purchases, and a Lifetime purchase ends with the Service (Section 5.5.1).

9. Disclaimers and liability

9.1 The Service is provided "as is" and "as available", without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including fitness for a particular purpose and non-infringement, to the maximum extent permitted by law.

9.2 Using game modifications carries inherent risk: server bans (all mods are "use at your own risk" under server policies such as Hypixel's), crashes, data loss, or incompatibility. You accept those risks.

9.3 To the maximum extent permitted by law, sourama's total liability arising out of the Service is limited to the greater of (a) NZD $50 and (b) the amount you paid for Service entitlements in the 12 months before the claim. Nothing in these Terms excludes rights that cannot be excluded under New Zealand law, including (where you acquire the Service as a consumer) the Consumer Guarantees Act 1993, or your non-excludable rights under the consumer laws of your own country.

9.4 If you use the Service in trade or for business purposes, the parties agree the Consumer Guarantees Act 1993 does not apply to that use.

9.5 Availability is not guaranteed. The Service may be unavailable, interrupted, or changed at any time, with or without notice, including for maintenance, and including where a third party the Service depends on (Mojang's authentication, a hosting provider, a payment provider) is itself unavailable.

9.6 Indemnity. You will indemnify sourama against any claim, demand, loss, or cost (including reasonable legal costs) arising out of (a) content you upload — including a claim that a cloak or other upload infringes somebody's rights, (b) your breach of these Terms, or (c) your use of the Service in a way these Terms do not permit. This does not apply to the extent the claim is caused by sourama's own breach, and nothing in it requires you to indemnify us against liability we cannot lawfully exclude.

9.7 Disputes with other people. Sour Client is used alongside servers and players we do not control. You release sourama from any claim arising out of a dispute between you and another player, a server operator, or any other third party.

10. Changes to these Terms

10.1 We may update these Terms. Material changes will be announced via the launcher and/or sourclient.com at least 14 days before taking effect (except changes required urgently for legal or security reasons).

10.2 Acceptance is recorded. When you first sign in, the launcher asks you to accept these Terms and records that you accepted, which version you accepted (the Terms version at the top of this document), and when. After a material change, you will be asked to accept the new version before continuing. If you decline, the launcher closes and no part of the Service is used. You can read the current version at any time at https://sourclient.com/terms.

10.3 Where a change is not material, continued use after the effective date is acceptance.

11. Governing law

These Terms are governed by the laws of New Zealand, and the courts of New Zealand have non-exclusive jurisdiction. If you are a consumer, this does not deprive you of the protection of mandatory consumer laws of your country of residence.

12. Contact and notices

12.1 sourama — contact@sourclient.com — https://sourclient.com

12.2 Notices reach you electronically. You agree that we may give you notices required by these Terms in the launcher, on sourclient.com, or by email, and that those satisfy any requirement that a notice be in writing.
